Put each live ad next to the exact page it links to. Check the product, offer, headline, look and next step. If any one of them changes after the click, fix the page or the ad before you add budget.
What message match means
Message match is how closely the landing page continues the promise of the ad. The words do not need to be identical. The shopper should feel they arrived where the ad said they would.
Google treats landing page experience, including relevance to the ad, as one part of ad quality. Meta and other platforms reward the same thing in practice: people who find what they expected keep going.
The eight point checklist
| Check | In the ad | On the page | It fails when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Product | The product or variant shown | Same product, same color, above the fold | The ad shows green, the page opens on black |
| Offer | Discount, bundle or free shipping | The same offer, visible without scrolling | The code is missing or applies only at checkout |
| Headline | The promise or benefit | The first line repeats it | The page opens with a generic brand slogan |
| Price | Any price or saving | The same number | The price changed after the ad was made |
| Look | Colors, type, photo style | The same visual world | A bright playful ad lands on a dark formal page |
| Proof | Reviews, awards, claims | The same proof, close to the claim | The ad quotes a review the page does not show |
| Next step | The button label | A primary button that does that | Shop now opens a quiz or a signup form |
| Phone | How it looks in a feed | How the page looks on a phone | The product photo crops out on mobile |
Shopify traps that break the match
- The ad links to the home page instead of the product or a collection.
- The ad shows one variant, but the product page opens on the default variant.
- A discount is promised in the ad but needs a code nobody sees on the page.
- A collection is sorted by best selling, so the hero product from the ad is not first.
- The offer ended in Shopify but the ad is still running.
- A theme update changed the page after the ad was approved.
Do not forget the email
Many shoppers do not buy on the first visit. The welcome or abandoned cart email that follows should repeat the same offer and look. If the ad says free shipping and the email pushes 10 percent off, you have two promises and a confused customer.
Run it in 20 minutes
- List your live ads, newest first.
- Open each final URL on a phone, not a laptop.
- Put the ad, the page and the follow up email side by side.
- Mark each of the eight checks pass or fix, and name who fixes it.
- Recheck after every new batch of ads or a theme change.
FAQ
What is ad to landing page message match?
It is how closely the page a shopper lands on continues the promise of the ad they clicked: the same product, offer, headline, look and next step.
Should the landing page repeat the ad headline word for word?
No. It should continue the same promise so the shopper knows they are in the right place. Close wording helps, exact copy is not required.
Should Shopify ads link to the home page?
Usually not. Link to the product or a focused collection or landing page that matches the ad.
How often should I check message match?
After every new batch of ads, every offer change and every theme update.
